GrowNYC is a 45-year-old nonprofit focused on providing food and education to New Yorkers, and is best known for running the city’s biggest farmers markets. The largest of all is in Union Square, open year-round, four days a week. About 383,000 people walk through the market each Friday during the summer.

The Union Square Greenmarket app, available now for free on both iOS and Android, gives a daily update of exactly what produce is at its peak. Tapping on any item tells you which vendors are selling it and which day they’ll be at the market, plus you can access a daily map to find out exactly where the stand you want is located. It also gives a more in-depth look at the farmers, complete with information about where they’re from and what their facilities are like.

The Greenmarket apps is a much more limited app than, say, Farmstand, which is designed to help you find nearby farmers markets, browse photos and find essential information like opening and closing times. But in its narrow focus it’s also really useful. For the hundreds of thousands of New Yorkers and visitors who head to the Union Square greenmarket, this app is a great way to see exactly what will be there – and where it came from.
