Submissions - Modern Farmer

Submissions

Modern Farmer is focused on three pillars of the food system: food equity, conscious consumption, and sustainable farming in North America. Within those pillars, we are looking for human-centered stories that move beyond simply informing our community, to ones that inspire them to take action in their own lives, whether that’s a new take on composting or shopping differently at the grocery store.

We’d also love to hear your solution stories—stories that look at issues and problems from the perspective of the people working on the solution. Solution stories should provide context while centering the response to a problem. This means including the limitations of a proposed solution, if it’s been replicated elsewhere, and the evidence to show that it works.

We are still interested in the offbeat and fun stories that make up so much of agriculture and our food system, but they will make up a smaller percentage of our editorial.

We are looking for:

  • Stories that speak to people who care about where their food comes from, and how to participate in and help develop a more equitable food system for all.
  • Stories that offer insight or make a surprising connection around how a particular issue or topic impacts daily life.
  • Stories with alternative formats—pictures, video, audio, social collaborations etc.

Compensation:

We pay writers based on story format and complexity, starting at a base rate of $350 USD.

Due to the number of submissions we receive, we are not able to reply to every pitch. If you don’t hear from us within three weeks of submitting your pitch, please feel free to take your idea elsewhere.
