At Last, States Reach a Colorado River Deal: Pay Farmers Not to Farm
Farmers in the southwest will get millions of dollars to reduce their water usage for just three years. But when the new conservation deal expires in 2026, states will have to return to the negotiating table yet again.
What about the food that won’t be produced by all those farming orgs not planting? Saving water, fantastic, but now we’ll have a produce shortage ? Which leads to (more) insane price increases? We solve one problem and create another one…
What am I missing?
This is a worrisome subject, I really enjoyed reading this article about it, it was interesting to learn the percent* of water used by agriculture alone in the lower part of the Colorado River basin.
We need to look at how they irrigate, there are better solutions.

Yes folks, as a farmer I know, hard choices are ahead if we are to maintain our precious riparian ecosystems. Crops that require inordinate amounts of water need to be substituted for things that are less thirsty. Plain and simple.
