What’s Eating America’s Farmers?
The last time the Farm Aid hotline rang like this, Ronald Reagan was president and Willie Nelson was playing a huge concert to raise money for hundreds of thousands of farmers across the country who were facing financial ruin. By the autumn of 1985, America’s “farm crisis” was suddenly a thing.
Why isn’t there any mention of the class action lawsuits filed against the beef packers recently for price fixing and collusion, the investigations for price fixing in chicken industry and likewise the same in the pork industry. Also, there is no mention of the recent removal of country of origin labeling which forces producers to complete with foreign producers for less return but with higher costs of production due to the US much stronger economy. Likely the same barriers/ impediments/greedy middlemen are sucking the viability from the crop producers….Without US farms, farmers, and the bounty that they coax from the… Read more »
This may seem harsh but, it’s easy to blame everyone else for a downfall. We have to show up at the lender to borrow money, it’s a choice. Our livelihood is as well. Personally when even a doubt in my mind came up, l had a backup plan. Our family lost all and l mean ALL in the 1980s.We got through by working other off-shift jobs(factory- customer baling-feed store)Many days we would get 2-4 hours of sleep. We always had another way of surviving. NEVER lose hope God has a plan.
New blood injected into the more remote areas of this vast agricultural land that is the US of A. Support the old war horses that are laboring so hard but need new markets and ideas. Old timers can learn from the newbies and build a more vibrant world for not just themselves but our shared futures. And this is beginning to happen. I am afraid that one day farms will run out of farmers. Who will want to be a farmer when there are easier ways to make a living.
Nice post
I shop at Farmers Market every week to buy my organic fruits and veggies for the week.
All these organic farmers are thriving and making a good profit.
Why can’t these farmers switch to growing actual good that people can eat, not GMO corn and soy that’s not even good to feed animals?
Federal loans are needed NOW to help transition farmers to organic. Those organic premiums are the only way we’re going to make it. With organic premiums at 3X – 4X conventional premiums (especially with dairy), there is a way out that does not require GMO seed and Ready Roundup and reduces the pressure to scale up in order to survive.
the Maine Organic Farmers and Gardeners Association (MOFGA) is in the process of developing a credit un ion to assist regional farmers with their special financing needs. Why can’t our government do the same?
Oh, this media publication has an anti-Trump as well? *eye roll*
