Milk On! A Vermont Dairy Farm Has Challenged Nintendo To A Cow-Milking Competition

An amazing battle of gamers vs. farmers.

The "Milk" game for the Nintendo Switch/courtesy Nintendo

In the game, you grab a controller (which is called the Joy-Con and kind of looks like a tiny Wii controller) and perform a milking sort-of motion: The Joy-Con has a few buttons running down the length of its side, which the game tasks you to squeeze in sequence, as if you’re milking an udder. (You know what? This is one of those times where it’s more trouble describing explaining how it works than it should be. Sorry. Basically, you just milk the controller.)

Anyway, the Billings Farm and Museum in Woodstock, VT, learned about the game and decided to playfully challenge the venerable gaming company to a milk-off. Billings Farm and Museum is an agricultural museum that also functions as an operational dairy farm, hosting 30 Jersey cows as well as sheep and draft horses on a site that includes an 1890 farmhouse.

Billings, in a post on Facebook on March 24th, tagged Nintendo’s Facebook account with the following message:

So Nintendo has a new game out called 1-2-Switch and we noticed it includes a cow milking game. We sent them a message inviting them out to our farm to show them how it’s REALLY done and to school them at their own game. Haven’t heard back yet. Maybe they’re too afraid of a little challenge…

The message was posted alongside a picture of a letter accusing Nintendo of being “pretty slow” at milking, as well as calling out Nintendo for making dairy milking seem easier than it really is. Extremely fun feud!

Nintendo, amazingly, replied to the Facebook post, accepting the challenge. (Billings replied with “Good luck! We’ve been at this for over a 100 years.” Nintendo, cheekily, noted: “So have we!”)

It’s not clear exactly what this challenge would be; would Nintendo representatives have to milk an actual cow? Would the farmers play this milking game? But gaming site Polygon reached out to Nintendo and got a reply stating that Nintendo is “actually going up there this week.” We can’t wait to see who wins in this true battle of titans. Stay tuned for updates.
