Syrup Bandits Strike Noble Vermont Farmstand

If the thief is reading this, just know: We will find this syrup.

Many farmers across the country have opted to use the honor system: They leave their wares in a small stand or shed by the side of the road, and trust that customers will leave money in exchange for them. This, mostly, works. But sometimes, there are jerks.

This week, in Dummerston, Vermont, a thief (or thieves) made off with a whopping 63 gallons of fresh Vermont maple syrup, valued at more than $4,000. The syrup was sitting in an honor-system-bound farmstand run by Dwight Miller Orchards, well-known in the community for selling apples, meat, and eggs in addition to syrup.

Read Miller, the owner of the farm, says he won’t allow this dastardly deed to deter his farm’s commitment to the time-honored honor system – but he does say he might install some cameras.
