Lena has an MA in environmental science journalism from the University of Montana, and her work has appeared in The Counter, Coastal Review, Montana Public Radio, The Guardian, and more. While at Modern Farmer, she won the North American Agricultural Journalists’ 2024 Next Gen Young Writer Award. In her spare time, you’ll find her reading, trail running, or trying to talk to people about shellfish.

A veteran broadcast journalist, Emily has worked across Canada as a daily news reporter. Her written work has appeared in The Globe and Mail, Maclean’s, Elle, and more. Her writing has been nominated for several awards, most recently a 2024 Digital Publishing Award.

Kristin Oxford

Senior Manager, Digital Engagement

Kristin’s background is in community engagement and strategic audience development. Prior to Modern Farmer, Kristin spent her career working in environment and conservation roles, from coastal resource management in the Philippines to wildlife policy in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem.

Liz has a background in journalism and extensive experience in communications in both in-house and agency roles. She calls beautiful Vancouver Island her home. Liz’s enthusiasm for social media extends beyond her day job—in her spare time, she also teaches at the University of Victoria.

Lauren’s nonprofit career spans 15 years with a focus on youth and socioeconomic development. She has a BA in Broadcast Journalism from Solent University and she once worked for the King of England. When she’s not traveling North America in her campervan, you can find her in Toronto, with her dog Walter.

Based in Boulder, Colorado, Sam previously worked on advocacy and policy at the Chef Ann Foundation and the Center for Science in the Public Interest. When not at work, you can likely find Sam about town enjoying a bowl of green chili and a pint of local beer.

Eric Nonacs

Executive Director

Based in Nashville, Eric is also the managing director of The Giustra Foundation and the chair of the management board of The Giustra International Foundation. He spends most of his spare time with his family, traveling, seeing live music, and bemoaning the performance of his hometown (Buffalo, NY) sports teams.

As an engagement journalist, Erica’s passion is telling stories that amplify voices from within the community she serves. She is the host and producer of the NPR new and noteworthy podcast The Wedge. In another life, Erica produced commercials and films, and she is a co-founder of a crowdfunding company that supports new and diverse voices in film and TV.
