“As an adult, I longed for that same feeling but my taste level has become a bit more elevated,” says Ford. “I’ve been doing high-end interior design work in [New York] City for almost twenty years, and I really wanted to combine the idea of where I came from with where I am now. With that in mind, I wanted to create a similar experience to the fairs I have such fond memories of but in a new carefully curated context.”
Modern Farmer will be at the show, too, so say hello to our editor-in-chief, Sarah Gray Miller.
Over the years, Ford, who founded his firm, Brad Ford ID, in 1998, has met a number of furniture designers and craftspeople in and around New York. He has always loved handmade objects and had a “fantasy for some time of putting something together that would celebrate modern makers.” Ford bandied the idea about with friends, and the more they talked about it, the more it began to take shape, culminating in the first Field + Supply event held last year in New York’s Hudson Valley.
This year, the show is being held October 10 and 11 at the Black Barn in High Falls, New York, and will feature more than 65 design and food exhibitors (nearly double the number from last year) including Billy Wolf: Fine K-9 Coatery, D. Bryant Archie textiles, Cold Spring General Store, Adirondack Guide Boat, Brooklyn Oyster Party, and Brotherly Grub BBQ. Plus, you can attend a variety of workshops to learn anything from calligraphy to arrow-making (!) to how to whip up your own herbal remedies. (These have an extra enrollment fee, and you must register online first.)
Modern Farmer will be at the show, too, so say hello to our editor-in-chief, Sarah Gray Miller. Can’t make it? Follow Field + Supply on our Instagram that weekend.
Ford says pulling off Field + Supply involves a lot of effort and coordination, but they have a “great team in place and they’re incredibly organized and passionate about the event which is always helpful. I certainly couldn’t do it without them.” He says everyone involved “has been extremely pleased with the turnout, sales, and the visibility this little town of High Falls receives. It’s a charming community, and I want to make sure everyone feels included.”
The hope is to make this an annual event, says Ford. He also recently opened a permanent showroom space in Manhattan called FAIR, which features some of the Field + Supply’s makers.
Hours: Saturday Oct. 10, 11am – 6pm; Sunday Oct. 11, 12pm – 5pm. Admission is $5 at the door + additional workshop fees. Kids 12 and under are free. For more information, visit fieldandsupply.com.
