Good Samaritan Cabby Brings Ducks to Safety

A cab driver in Calgary, Alberta, gave a family of ducks a friendly lift last week, saving them from oncoming traffic.

When Urga Adunga spotted a mother and her nine ducklings in the road, he pulled over, put on his warning lights, and stopped other cars from passing. “I didn’t want to pass them because there is no way for them to escape from the road. It’s blocked all the way,” he said to CBC News.

Other people stopped to help, including some who tried to use baby carriers and a child’s backpack to gather the ducklings. They then helped Adunga scoop them up and situate them in the back of his cab.

With 10 comfortably seated passengers, he drove to the nearby Bow River. The ducks needed some coaxing to leave the cab, but once they did, Adunga watched them all waddle down to the water without charging the estimated $21 fare.

“As a human it is our responsibility to protect those animals, nature and the environment,” he said. “I could do it again, too. Not only the animals, humans, too. We have to rescue each other, we have to help each other.”

According to Adunga, these may have been the most unusual passengers he’s encountered during this six-month tenure as a taxi driver.
