Meet the Movie Billboard Chicken Coops

Mark Anderson raises poultry. Actually, he raises pastured poultry. This distinction is far more than a semantic difference. At Champoeg Farm, northwest of Salem, Oregon, Mark’s birds enjoy an intensive rotational schedule getting access to bugs and grubs and an abundance of grass. Its the foraged diet that all poultry yearn for, and one that the majority rarely get.

To walk around Champoeg Farm, is to witness an impressive balance of pragmatism and experimentation. Perhaps most illustrative of this balance is the brooding house. Mark’s young hens-to-be live the first phase of their lives sheltered from the Oregon rains by repurposed vinyl from spent billboards.

Creative reuse, has long been a tenant of agriculture, but in the last half century the material game has changed. There is an increasing presence of plastics on farms. With a little ingenuity and a few phone calls, Mark found a resourceful way to adapt.
