November 6: Stories That Caught Our Attention This Week

Some goats fart, some lick windows. Also, coffee lung is a thing.

This week, Marketplace.org highlight a farmstand situated within a bus terminal in Dayton, Ohio. This might sound run-of-the-mill to big city folk, but Dayton is largely a food desert with, in some cases, more accessible liquor and dollar stores than food markets.

Out east, a runaway goat turned himself into Massachusetts police by finding a squad car and licking the hell out of the window until the goat’s owner showed up. A charming, albeit suave-less escape.

In other goat news, Mashable reports that goat farts set off a smoke alarm and grounded a plane in Bali, maybe. But maybe not. Singapore Airlines says that the goat fart blame game was media-generated. You know how many goats were on that plane, though? 2,186. That’s a lot of potential farts. Anyway, the plane took off again and landed safely at its destination.

You know popcorn lung? Commercial roaster workers beware: coffee lung is a thing, too. A study published Monday by the American Journal of Industrial Medicine suggested that two chemicals created during the roasting process might make the air within the roasting facility toxic. Something for the rest of us to keep in mind while sipping our morning cup o’ joe.

Lastly, as scientists, farmers, and foodies and stressed about the impending food crisis (too many people and not enough food by 2050), an MIT architect-turned-urban-farmer created the food computer, which is essentially a climate-control box that attaches to greenhouses and helps the food grow. HuffPo‘s episode on the new tech is eleven minutes well spent.
