Farmer Carves Presidential Endorsement Into His Field In Giant Letters

He won't let his political endorsement go unnoticed.

Mike Pattavina

Mike Pattavina owns a sizable soybean farm in Clarinda, Iowa, in the far southwest of the state. He tells the The Des Moines Register that he had suffered from some theft: His Bernie Sanders yard signs, endorsing the Democratic presidential candidate, had been stolen from his front yard.

Annoyed, Pattavina came up with a way to prevent any possible future theft and also make a much bigger statement of support than any yard sign. He plowed “Bernie” into his field of soybeans in enormous letters. (He estimates the “B” alone is 60 feet high.)

This might be the most extreme endorsement so far, but Sanders enjoys the support of many farmers nationwide. Sanders is known for his support especially of small farmers, protecting, for example, the small dairy farmers in his home state of Vermont by passing legislation to ensure minimum prices. His site notes that he also supports extensive immigration reform to grant immigrant farmers, an essential part of the agricultural system, the ability to live more openly in the US.

Oh, and if you’re wondering how a farmer can afford to mow a giant endorsement in a working field? Pattavina’s soybeans had already been harvested for the year.
