LA shade balls, farmers selling pizza, Pop-Tart flavored beer, the history of watermelons, and more.
Earlier this week, a handful of cool balls were thrown into the Los Angeles reservoir in an effort to save water during the drought. Okay, fine, more than a few: 96 million, to be exact. They’re shade balls: They absorb UV rays, keep the water from being contaminated, and keep animals from slurping up the water supply. We know balls don’t have distinguishable sides, but talk about multi-faceted.
Over in the Midwest, saucy farms have been selling farm-fresh pizza to earn a little extra dough. Perhaps it will taste ok with 21st Amendment’s new Pop-Tart flavored beer (or perhaps not, but we’d try it).
A little further east, states from Texas to South Carolina might be looking to borrow some of LA’s shade balls for their unexpected flash drought. Hopefully this one doesn’t stick around for long.
And finally, today, we learned about the screwy, intercontinental, and bitter history of watermelons from National Geographic.
