These fruit crates are nothing without their labels.

Rising to popularity in the 19th century, these labels often depicted scenes of sunny California, where the produce originated.

Nowadays, crate labels are a nostalgic reminder of the past. Collectors snap them up on websites, they are displayed at museums, and the subjects of books.

Here are eight examples that make us miss summer terribly, and long for some Californian sunshine.
